Observations of a Correlated Gamma-Ray and Optical Flare for BL Lacertae

چکیده

BL Lacertae was detected by the EGRET instrument on CGRO at the 10.2 σ level with an average flux of 171 ± 42 × 10 photons cms at energies > 100 MeV during the optical outburst of 1997 July. This flux is more than 4 times the previously highest level. Within the July 15-22 observation there was a dramatic factor of 2.5 increase in the gamma-ray flux on July 18.75–19.08, apparently preceding by several hours a brief optical flare. The gamma-ray flux decreased to its previous level within 8 hrs and the optical flux decreased to its prior level in less than 2 hrs. The gamma-ray photon spectral index of 1.68 ±0.12 indicates that the spectrum during the 7-day observation was harder than the previous detection. Observations of low and intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacs above 100 GeV with VERITAS

Most of the ∼ 50 blazars detected to date at TeV energies (E > 0.1TeV) are high-frequencypeaked BL Lacs (HBLs). Only a handful episodic detections of lowand intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (LBL/IBLs, with synchrotron peak frequencies in the infrared and optical regime) have been reported by ground-based gamma-ray telescopes, typically during high-flux states. The VERITAS array located in ...

A Synchrotron Self-Compton Scenario for the Very High Energy γ-ray Emission of the Intermediate BL Lacertae object W Comae

W Comae has significant variability in multi-wavelengthes, from the radio to the gamma-ray bands. A bright outburst in the optical and X-ray bands was observed in 1998, and most recently, a strong TeV flare was detected by VERITAS in 2008. It is the first TeV intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae (IBL) source. I find that both the broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) quasi-simulta...

Multiwavelength Observations of a Flare from Markarian 501

We present multiwavelength observations of the BL Lacertae object Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) in 1997 between April 8 and April 19. Evidence of correlated variability is seen in very high energy (VHE; E * 350 GeV) gray observations taken with the Whipple Observatory g-ray telescope, data from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and quick-look res...

Multiwavelength observations of a TeV-Flare from W Com

We report results from an intensive campaign of multiwavelength observations of the intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object W Com (z=0.102) during a strong outburst of very high energy (VHE; E > 180 GeV) gamma-ray emission in June 2008. The initial detection of this VHE flare by VERITAS, an array of four 12-m diameter imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes, was followed by observatio...

THE TeV GAMMA-RAY SPECTRUM OF MARKARIAN 421 DURING AN INTENSE FLARE

We present the gamma-ray spectrum of the BL Lacertae object, Markarian 421, above 500 GeV during its most intense recorded TeV flare, on 1996 May 7. The spectrum is well fitted by a power law with an exponent of (statistical and systematic errors). The spectrum extends above 5 TeV with no evidence 22.56 5 0.07 5 0.1 for a cutoff, favoring determinations of the extragalactic infrared energy dens...
